First of all

It's official. My first year away from home is done. That is so crazy to think about. Only in looking back do I realize how much things have changed. I've had so many new experiences. I can see why I had certain challenges and how I grew from them. I'm definitely a list kind of person so all year I wrote down the things which I did for the first time and I wanted to share a few of them.
First time...
- Donating blood (not the first time I've passed out :P)
- Making bread by myself
- Going to the Legislature building
- Asked to be a bridesmaid
- Toilet papering
- Catching a wild animal! ( it was a baby bunny but feral non-the-less)
- Being a visiting teacher
- Being in the stampede parade with Kate and Will (dare I say the last as well)
- Going to a YSA ward
- Living with roommates

- Selling something on eBay (I never wish that on anyone)
- Cooking a meal for the missionaries (also something I never wish on the missionaries again.)
- Gone to the Edmonton Temple

- Getting flowers
- Gone wedding dress shopping (the order of this and the previous have nothing to do with eachother!)
- Got an acceptance letter for school
- Gone on a double date and blind one

- Went for a polar bear swim
- Taken engagement photos
- Made a T-shirt (refer to the Charlie Brown t-shirt from my previous post, Model: Arland Hudkins)
- Driven a truck
- Driven in snow

- ....Fishtailed
-Writing a blog

Beginning With the End in Mind

Life has been full of goodbyes and endings lately. I've said goodbye to my beautiful cousin who I won't be living with anymore. It's a strange thought to not come home to family or to not have someone who is so close to me that we can read each other's thoughts.

I'm leaving my apartment that I've called home for this past year, why is it so hard to part with inanimate things?

I didn't even get a goodbye with my little Kitty that I've grown up with. She's gone to that field of catnip in the sky. And I can't believe I'll never hear her purr at the end of my bed again.

I shook hands with my best friend as he left to serve a two year mission in Santiago Chile. It's unreal to think we'll never have another unexpected snow day to come up with ways to break into your own car or explore small shops along Whyte Ave. It's scary that life will find us at very different places when we meet again.

My job is finishing tomorrow and friends who I have come to love in such a short time will be distanced from me, some quite possibly forever.

And I'm being separated in a completely new-to-me way with friends going where I can't follow.

But I suppose there would never be sunrises without a sunset. Sometimes though, it's the hardest to remember how lovely morning is when the last pieces of vibrant red disappear to a charcoal sky. So now I'm just waiting. Dawn must be coming soon. This night air is getting to me.

I Have a Dream

I'm not one to have big dreams. I mean I have goals like having a family and finishing my education. but I've never been the type to fantasize about touring foreign countries, living an extravagant life-style or altering the world in some large way. I just want to be happy. But for once I had a dream. It started 2 years ago when I job shadowed a sonographer technician and I knew what career path I wanted to follow. It was a rough beginning because I had to catch up on classes I hadn't needed before. having to take physics courses online and in nightschool while still taking on a full academic course load, working part-time and all the responsibility of 3 church callings almost broke and cracked me in places for sure. Sometimes I didn't have the support I wanted from everyone. Some of my friends told me I was better than an ultrasound tech and I felt looked down on for setting my sights supposedly below my potential. Not getting in the first year didn't encourage any positive sentiments of my abilities. Still, because I am so stubborn when it comes to my personal achievements, I made every possible effort to attain my dream. I moved away from my family, I re-applied, I cried and I waited. I studied, I was interviewed, I stressed and I waited. The odds were stacked with 66% failure rate AFTER being shortlisted.

One rainy tuesday morning my phone vibrated. of course not having caller ID I picked up expecting it to be my mom (who else do I talk to, really?). The unfamiliar voice asked for Naomi. And then proceeded to offer me my dream. All I heard was "we would like to give you a seat in the Diagnostic Medical Imaging program
for Sonography." She didn't tell me to sit down like they do in the movies when they give you big news!

What I found most intriguing about this was I didn't feel that great relief or excitement or overwhelming joy that I was expecting for 2 years. I think I felt more relief when I finished my Physics night course, and more excitement when I got a B in Calculus and the most overwhelming joy when I got an interview for the program. I had my triumphs all along the way and the acceptance letter was just the ribbon that tied the package together. The victory wasn't a phone call. It was the late nights I finished my homework and went to bed without a congratulatory pat on the back.
The "big" things in life were all accomplished by day to day small tasks. The little things are the big things.
